Supino Pizzeria

Props to Chef and Owner Dave Mancini for making the best NY style pizza where Detroit pizza is a style. Supino Pizzeria is named after the Italian town his family is from. After visiting Supino, Italy, Dave came back to the US wanting to start his own pizzeria. With many tries with his own Kitchen Aid at home, he perfected the dough using bread flour and started Supino Pizzeria in 2008. Sourcing almost all of his ingredients from the fame Detroit Eastern Market with local farmers across the area, expect fresh ingredients with your pizza. I visited this spot back in 2012 and recently again in 2021. Since then, he expanded the space which once stood one of his other restaurants La Rondinella now gone. He also opened a second location in Feb 2021 at the New Center building on Woodward Avenue with a bigger kitchen and full bar (https://www.yelp.com/biz/supino-pizzeria-detroit-4).

The pizzas are NY style perfection rivaling those I’ve had in New York City. Supino’s signature pizza roasted garlic, black olives, chili oil, and ricotta cheese is a vegetarian’s dream with a perfect mix of savory and spice. I had this pizza when I visited Supino in 2012 and recently again. I honestly felt it tasted better the second time. Practice makes perfect. The Eastern Market brings the best of Supino as farms bring fresh ingredients that Dave is able to source. The day I visited, the special of the day was a kale pesto pizza with plum tomatoes, ricotta cheese, and capers. Maybe a little more kick would have made it better but overall still great. The space is much better than the last time I visited since they expanded the space which once stood his other restaurant La Rondinella. Because of COVID, it stands as a waiting area for walk in orders. I truly recommend ordering directly on Supino’s website (https://www.supinopizzeria.com/order-online) in advance so you don’t need to wait. Otherwise I suggest walking and shopping the Eastern Market across the street. Besides, you are most likely to be eating the same ingredients you will see at the farmer’s market since Dave does the same that morning. Do what I did and just place your order in advance, shop the market while supporting local farmers, and then finish the day with a fresh hot pizza by lunch. Sound like a perfect Saturday.
